Not sure how other makers work but I do not sit down with an end product in mind when I make icons. I see a pretty picture and think it has potential. No clue what I'll end up with, which explains why so many of my icons look alike. On the best days my brain is a contrary mistress so a challenge of 13 different techniques is hard to wrap my brain around. Complicating it so that I can't re-use a character? That's cruel and unusual. :) Which is exactly why I signed up.

I might have made a boatload of icons that could fit multiple categories and then figured out which of them worked for the challenge. So, uh, have a boatload of alternates plus a few Season 5 and Seasons Not Five and a couple strays.

Small-ish post this time; I'll be away from home for the next week+ so I wanted to post these before leaving. I still owe some folks comments from the last 2(!) posts. I'll try to get to those before leaving town but probably you won't hear from me until after I'm back. Sorry.

I'm loving this show. I think that I'm supposed to like Ichabod more than I do but Abbie and Jenny? I am totally all over the sisters. Love their relationship and the way they challenge each other. They have entire conversations that involve plott-y things rather than boys. Bestill my heart! I appear to be a sucker for a good sibling Supernatural show.

I'm completely grooving on the leading protagonists, a man and woman, working together, collaborating, socializing, saving each others' lives...but they AREN'T romantically entangled! Given that it's American TV, I'm sure they'll eventually disappoint me but right now I'm reveling all the perfection. He's in love with and pining for his dead/trapped/witchy wife. And oh what a delicious twist Henry is! Don't spoil me, LJ. I want to roll around in the pretty.

LOTS of contest entries & alternates here. For inspired20in20, I was particularly taken with the close-up inspirational icons. I love seeing a character's expression but my super-close crops are usually awkward. I worked on that skill here, perhaps a little too much. Inspirational words such as "quiet," "fair," and "understated" left me at sea because I'd chosen Teen Wolf, which would be the polar opposite of those words. It's all angst and action and music and brash-ness and dead family. For quiet, I chose to make them all textless -- except for one because I needed to use the chosen fonts. (And one other but the text is more subtle than my added text normally is.) Hover over the icons in the set to see what inspirations I chose for each.

I'm having a blast over at thehuntergames even if I'm seriously outclassed by other participants. In contrast to the Teen Wolf set, most of these icons have text because I'm trying to develop text skills. Some worked out; some did not. I'm also playing with bright colors, which feels like an oxymoron when iconning Supernatural but pretty boys (and girls) look pretty in pretty colors.

The Deanmon icon may be the creepiest icon I've ever made; I had to balance it with some silly, happy, and sexy Deans and a peek of Sam dimples and Castiel tongue. It was necessary. *nods*

I hate the makeup job they do on wereKate; she looks like a wereBlueberry. Why did they make her a streaky blue?!? Jaguars are not blue. Also, I despair of Season 4's love of dark tunnels. Wonderful atmosphere but they make for blurry, fuzzy graphics. When the screencap starts pixelated, it's hard (for me, at least) to pull a decent image out of it.

On a personal note, I've spent much of the past week with a bone infection (über-painful) and my vision wonky as the optometrist tries to figure out the best compromise for my non-standard vision issues. I'm a walking raw nerve and I'm totally using that as an excuse for some of my less successful experiments below, even though that's probably a lie as most of these were made well before I became decrepit. It is a good excuse for why I put them here for the world to see.

These last couple of months have been super busy so not many icons and even less time spent being sociable. OTOH, I had not one but two successful project presentations for our high-standards dean so it was worth it. Still a long slog ahead but since university policy is take your time-off or lose it, I'm being paid to stay home and play with my dogs for little while. Some people call this vacation. Perhaps I'll even catch up on all the unanswered comments from my last post.

My love affair with using the same crop over and over continues. Some day I'll go back to doing wider angle, scenic icons or perhaps I'll finally figure out how to make complex compositions that look good but for now, pretty faces are pretty and that's what makes me happy. Ignoring my composition issues, I learned a lot about hard light from an awesome tutorial that wickdshy wrote and I've been playing with it. I've only had time to read and absorb half of the tutorial but I'm liking the results and can't wait to finish it.

FANDOM: Guys, I tried to icon the SPN finale but it defeated me; it was too painful. I need to live with something a little happier for now, thus the ridiculously few SPN finale icons. I enjoyed it more than I expected but just as I never could get into iconning Samifer, I'm having issues with Knight Dean and the lead up to it. I'm still meandering through Teen Wolf, iconning seasons 1 and 3. I will buckle down and go through Season 2 since it was Jackson-ful and he has such a pretty, pretty face. The Avengers icons came out of left field; I wanted to make an Iron Man icon and what I had was Avengers promo pics so...*shrug*

For my happy place, I basked in the final year of Calvin & Hobbes: 1995. A few were re-runs but the common thread is comics printed in the final year, ending with the final panel of the final strip ever. I love iconning C&H but it takes for bloody ever because I lose *hours* re-reading them, studying the drawings and appreciating how Bill Watterson communicated so much in such a tiny space and with so few lines. The man is a genius in art AND text. I wish he were showing the art he has done since he retired the strip because I'm burning with curiosity.

ICONS: I'm working on/experimenting with text, mostly in the Calvin & Hobbes icons. Text is *hard* and I hate it but I'm too wordy to make 100% textless. Some day, after I've mastered text and color and cropping and everything else on my long list of "need to master," I'll work on more complex composition. But for now pretty faces are pretty and what I like to look at when blown up to 600% on my screen so that's mostly what I icon.

I've been looking around for icon contests to force me to work on my skills but LJ is kind of dead. What isn't dead is likely to be elite. Happily, I found a new comm here and one at DW so hopefully those will spur me to try new things. This post includes my entries for those contests. Woot!

Not going to lie, I'm a little embarrassed to be watching something called, "Teen Wolf." I'm not MTV's target demographic and the main characters are far too young for me but some of the ancillary characters are HOT and the show spends a lot of energy figuring out how to get the men out of their shirts. I am shallow. Very, very shallow. Some of the writing is good (the long-term story lines) and some of it's very not good. They're employing gorgeous women (Including Buffy's Kendra! I loved Bianca on Buffy and I love her here, too!) who are lots of fun to icon; I'm struggling to find a cap of Deacon that I like for iconning so sadly no Deacon yet.

Did I mention the men spend a lot of time without shirts?

It was kind of a relief to return to the mature men of SPN, where I don't feel vaguely uneasy about the actors' ages. I love show but I'm Supernaturaled out this week. I'm having some issues with the way the boys have changed over the years (went from saving people, hunting things! to just hunting things) and haven't changed (still lying to protect the other) that I find disturbing and frustrating. I was very sad to see Abaddon go; Alaina Huffman is so drop dead gorgeous and she owns every scene. I've seen rumbling about Dean's new colorful wardrobe, which I get from a characterization PoV. From an iconning PoV, I'm all for something not drab and same old-same old so it's a wash for me.

If we'd get fewer layers of shirts, of any color, and more Supernatural shirtlessness I would be in Heaven. \o/

The scientist icons were something I started back in 2011 but I lost my source caps in a HD failure. It took a surprising amount of time to gather them in the first place so I think I'll call this done though I had lots more planned.

My apologies to those who kindly commented on my posts but whom I never answered; I haven't been up to even the thinnest veneer of social niceties for quite a while. Real life sucked and then sucked in new and creative ways for a long time. Either life isn't so bad now or I've adapted. I like to think it's the former. I'm watching SPN Season 9 after having missed most of 8 and the Photoshop bug has bitten me hard. Not sure that I'm up to extended commenting yet so should you want to save/use any of these, don't feel obligated to comment.

Turns out when you don't open Photoshop for more than a year, you forget a lot. Thank you to the people who choose caps for challenges; I leaned heavily on your work as I limped through breaking back into iconning. As is my wont, these are simple composition icons -- mostly very pretty faces.

This is the second half of the icons I made for chicklet25, obstinatrix, annundriel, and greybhan311 as the result of a discussion about how there aren't enough icons of the women of Supernatural and the actresses who play them. Thank you for putting the caps together for me so that all I had to do was download and look at all the pretty.

For those following along at home as I ever so slowly make my way through the BBC's glorious version of Pride & Prejudice, this technically marks the half way point as this installment takes me through the end of the third hour. I couldn't stand to icon the disastrous Hunsford proposal. I know it's pivotal but it's just so saaaaaad. Poor, deluded kids.

One of my favorite times of year: Gag Reel! Sorry for the somewhat uneven quality of these; leaked film on the internet does not compare to Blu Ray for original image quality. raloria did an amazing job in isolating some awesome caps from the grainy footage and caught some amazing moments. Thank you!

My new fandom love is Covert Affairs. I think I have a crush on the entire cast but most especially on Piper Perabo. I already liked her quite a bit but CA seems to be a weekly 45-minute paean to the prettiness that is Piper. She runs in heels! She hikes! She skydives! She speaks multiple languages! She walks around in bikinis and she never, ever has a bad hair day. The supporting cast is also very pretty though they don't wear bikinis or fight in foot-breaking heels. Pity. I think Sendhil Ramamurthy would be hot in a bikini.

This is my first big bang and my first foray into larger format art. o.o I am quite happy to flee back to the comfort of my tiny squares after this. :D

Many thanks to brihana25 who provided me with an action-packed story as inspiration for the art and who has been very supportive. I was nervous about trying something new and she has been extremely positive. Thank you!

That's the building they used for the exterior shots of Vogel Towers in the show. That took me a bit of sleuthing as most Dark Angel fan sites have gone offline. Yay for benign neglect and legacy discussion boards! \o/

Icon Recommendations

I'm starting a series of recommendations of makers whose work I admire. I've collected icons from >50 makers, thus the series. Let me know how frequently you want to see them, please? I don't know know how often I'll do them but I'd like a feel for how often would be too often.

I recently nominated a bunch of icon makers over at magicawards so I'm kicking off the recs with several of the makers whose work I ran out of time for nominating and a couple who are new-to-me.

winterfish, Icon Tag: I've long admired winterfish's icons; she made many of my favorite SG-1 icons. She has a lovely sense of humor, her images are crisp, and she uses natural, warm colors that I adore but what makes her work stand out for me is the diversity in her icons. She features characters of color alongside the usual suspects found in everybody else's icons. I like that her icons are good AND inclusive.

janie_tangerine at rockin_graphix: Fellow Misha/Castiel fan whose way with words on icons makes me laugh. Whenever there's a Supernatural episode with lots of wordy jokes, I eagerly await her post because I KNOW I'm going to be snagging a ton of icons. She's made quite a few Misha icons that are my tried and true friends.

txduck, Icon Tag: Interesting crops and puns! Txduck's work is a departure from my usual love of color, color, and more color. Her icons' muted colors have a tranquility about them. I envy her cropping skills. Her icons look like no others' icons.

tle_lovie69 at trueasthenight: I discovered this maker when somebody else nominated her at magicawards. The color, composition, use of textures...everything grabs me and makes me wish I made icons like these. So much pretty!

adina_mpj at sick_muse_icons: Another new-to-me maker whose work I "met" at magicawards. An amazing use of color and composition, the icons are just plain old preeeeetty.

Notes: Continuing from my last post, I'm experimenting with color and now looking, tentatively, into a more interesting composition. I've cropped Castiel's face in just about every way it can be so continuing on as usual is pointless. I'm still searching for a different style that works for me. I might have made too many icons from the new Misha photo and too many ~~Jensen~~ Ben icons from Dark Angel. Oops?

Months ago I promised immlass that I'd make her a bunch of icons from Inception, with particular attention paid to Cillian Murphy for her pb use. I'm finally starting to fill that promise. However, I get bored when iconning the same face over and over without break so I started getting creative with textures and colors on a couple. I've included the standard version from before I started messing with it for immlass as judging by other pb icons, the point isn't to be arty but to have a clear emotion.

Pride & Prejudice. I'm on the third disc but I find this part of the story depressing and I couldn't stand it any longer. I jumped ahead to some happier times so this is just a small, motley collection.
