I would really love to look over your shoulder when you are using curves because I can't imagine being able to use them so well. I am quite envious of your ability to use them to that purpose.
I suspect that selective color is supposed to be a bit more complex than my understanding of it but I haven't found any good explanations and so I have made up my own system.
