I managed to icon a few more Supernatural characters this time. It helps that Castiel's coat is getting boring. And yes, #61 is totally Teryl Rothery because I still love that woman with all my heart, even when she has a tiny guest role on SPN. I'm glad I iconned the episode (Season 2's Heart) because it turned out to be a good one for very pretty Sam. One of these days, I'll work my way into the Ruby and Anna period. I'm looking forward to iconning some women! Misha continues to provide excellent icon fodder, bless his heart. Calvin & Hobbes is love. That is all.

Your text!! Especially in the Misha icons from 81-98, is so good. The placement, font choice, and the words themselves work so well. You manage to achieve a crispness that I just can't get, especially with the really small font sizes. I'd love to find out more about the way you deal with text. At what stage do you add it to the icon?

I love icons 26 and 69 and the Calvin and Hobbes ones are so funny and adorable.

Text is always the very last thing that I add to an icon. I don't know how crisp my text is compared to anyone else's but one thing that I do differently from most makers is that I crop/color/work my caps at 200 dpi to keep image loss to the final step. I don't know if it makes a difference really but I'm a control freak. Using a higher dpi means that I have to use ridiculously small point fonts.

Normally the font I use is 3.5-4.0 pts, which I'm assuming translates to about 7-8 pts in 100 dpi and somewhat larger at 72 dpi, which is what a lot of people use since that's what the image is eventually saved at for use on the web. I don't *think* that it should make a difference in how sharp the text is in the final icon but maybe it does?

For certain I know that placement of the text layer affects how sharp it is. I normally place the text layer on the very top of all other layers because I've noticed that coloring and adjustment layers tend to make the text more blurry. If it still isn't sharp enough for my taste, I will use the unsharpen filter on the text layer itself but 9 times out of 10 that changes the text without substantially improving it. (It's just annoying in a different way.)

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. Don't know how helpful I am but I'm willing to try. :D

Oh! One trick I use for text that I just remembered is that any time I'm going to rotate the text, I first rasterize the layer. The mathematics behind rotating an image seems to be better than the mathematics behind rotating text. It makes a huge difference in quality. More than any other thing I've thought to mention.

I've also noticed that I can resize the rasterized text a tiny bit if it's taking up too much room without losing much quality or readability.

I usually make things at a larger size until the text stage but I hadn't even thought of working at higher resolution. Hmm, I'll have a go at that and see if it makes a difference.
