Notes: Continuing from my last post, I'm experimenting with color and now looking, tentatively, into a more interesting composition. I've cropped Castiel's face in just about every way it can be so continuing on as usual is pointless. I'm still searching for a different style that works for me. I might have made too many icons from the new Misha photo and too many Jensen Ben icons from Dark Angel. Oops?

Months ago I promised immlass that I'd make her a bunch of icons from Inception, with particular attention paid to Cillian Murphy for her pb use. I'm finally starting to fill that promise. However, I get bored when iconning the same face over and over without break so I started getting creative with textures and colors on a couple. I've included the standard version from before I started messing with it for immlass as judging by other pb icons, the point isn't to be arty but to have a clear emotion.

Pride & Prejudice. I'm on the third disc but I find this part of the story depressing and I couldn't stand it any longer. I jumped ahead to some happier times so this is just a small, motley collection.

I see you're experimenting with coloring again :) What effect do you want to achieve? More vibrant/intense colors?
I've been experimenting a little too - with my Community icons from my latest batch and I colored them with textures set on Soft Light or/and Color Burn/Dodge etc and used layer masks A LOT :).

I love your Doctor Who icons, #154 & #155 are perfect.

Oh dear. Is that good or bad? ;) I am, indeed, experimenting again. I'm restless and dissatisfied with what I'm doing. I need to find something new to do so yes, I'm experimenting with color.

I do want more vibrant colors. I look at posts of SPN icons I've created and they're all dark and drab and single person, usually close up in their faces. I want color and happiness.I look at the way that juanxyo and kawaii_chicken use eye-popping color and it looks juicy and fruity and happy. I'm not made for working with color quite that saturated and I'm trying to figure out how to use it. I look at tle_lovie69 and think, "hey, that looks like something I wish I had made." Vibrant and saturated is my way of trying to do similar things without copying.

I stink at using textures for coloring. Perhaps it's because I'm too lazy to use a bunch and then mask out most of it? I have no sense of what will work best and what settings to choose. And while experimentation is the only real way to learn, the sheer number of textures and settings options is mind boggling for me.

I love Amy Pond's face and hair. She's very pretty and they film her to catch her expressive eyes. For some reason, I'm generally more interested in the companions than in the Doctors. *shrug*

I've been lurking your graphics journal probably from the beginning so I recognize your style and notice if something changes:). There's nothing wrong with experimenting, we all want to improve, try something new.
You always made SPN icons bright and I loved the contrast between dark/black background and bright skin tones - like in the icon I'm using. For me, it's perfect.

When you use textures for coloring - yes, you have to erase most of it but if you leave some of it on subject's hair/hat/shoulder you get nice light effect (like here (http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q182/Xafirah/Community/comm08a.png)). It really takes much time to play with the textures but I think it's how juanxyo and kawaii_chicken do :). I love their icons, too - very inspiring :D.
I just wanted to share some ideas with you, you helped me A LOT with sharpness and coloring and thank you again for that :).

Yeah, Amy Pond is really pretty, I love her hair. What a shame I can't stand the character! ;D

I wish you'd said something sooner as then we could have been friends for even longer. ♥ I think it's hysterical that you can spot changes that I would not. Did I make that icon? I have no memory of it. *sigh*

While I've succeeded in making the subject visible in the icons, the overall tone is still dark. Compare the SPN to the Star Trek or Pride and Prejudice. Now, part of that is the difference in the source and their style. But if you compare Star Trek to 62-67, it's less dramatic.

When I say the icons are dark, I consider these dark: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 25, 26, 19, 30, 34, 35, 38, 39, 40, 55, and 57. If the icon itself isn't dark then the background is very dark trending to black. I look at the page and think, "boring and how is that different from the last 5 posts? how am I growing?"

Thank you for the ideas. Feel free to keep them coming! I welcome new approaches, especially since I'm in an experimental mood. I had no idea that I'd helped you with sharpness and coloring but I'm happy to have done my very small part in contributing to your genius. :D

I never much like the companions at first (I didn't like Rose until she took in the TARDIS) except for Martha. Loved Martha. But when it comes to iconning, I prefer the women to the Doctors. Rory seems blank to me but River? I ADORE her!
