FANDOM: Guys, I tried to icon the SPN finale but it defeated me; it was too painful. I need to live with something a little happier for now, thus the ridiculously few SPN finale icons. I enjoyed it more than I expected but just as I never could get into iconning Samifer, I'm having issues with Knight Dean and the lead up to it. I'm still meandering through Teen Wolf, iconning seasons 1 and 3. I will buckle down and go through Season 2 since it was Jackson-ful and he has such a pretty, pretty face. The Avengers icons came out of left field; I wanted to make an Iron Man icon and what I had was Avengers promo pics so...*shrug*

For my happy place, I basked in the final year of Calvin & Hobbes: 1995. A few were re-runs but the common thread is comics printed in the final year, ending with the final panel of the final strip ever. I love iconning C&H but it takes for bloody ever because I lose *hours* re-reading them, studying the drawings and appreciating how Bill Watterson communicated so much in such a tiny space and with so few lines. The man is a genius in art AND text. I wish he were showing the art he has done since he retired the strip because I'm burning with curiosity.

ICONS: I'm working on/experimenting with text, mostly in the Calvin & Hobbes icons. Text is *hard* and I hate it but I'm too wordy to make 100% textless. Some day, after I've mastered text and color and cropping and everything else on my long list of "need to master," I'll work on more complex composition. But for now pretty faces are pretty and what I like to look at when blown up to 600% on my screen so that's mostly what I icon.

I've been looking around for icon contests to force me to work on my skills but LJ is kind of dead. What isn't dead is likely to be elite. Happily, I found a new comm here and one at DW so hopefully those will spur me to try new things. This post includes my entries for those contests. Woot!

*smishes you* Loooooong time no chat in comments. It feels like ages because it has been ages. I hope that life is being good to you. I recently adopted a puppy and his father from rescue -- and named them Calvin and Hobbes. They're seriously cute and a Very Happy Thing.

I think sometimes icons are a small bit of fanart you keep around to look at on a rainy day or just to make you happy. The Sheriff Stilinski one is a good example of that - I know I'm probably unlikely to actually use it, but it's beautiful, and makes me smile when I run across it in my icon folder(s). Plus, I don't have any of others of him, so that makes it extra nice. :)

I inadvertently reversed their names from their personalities: since Calvin gives life to Hobbes, I named Papa Calvin and the puppy Hobbes. I should have reversed those.

Papa is a model dog; I couldn't ask anything more from a dog (well, except for his selective outdoor deafness but that's a common genetic defect in dogs of all types). Hobbes, being a puppy, has been a whirlwind of mischief. He's adorable and sweet and waaaay too smart to be a cocker spaniel; I'm eagerly planning to get us into agility together. They're remarkably good dogs and I'm very lucky; many, many people wanted one of the litter and everyone who met Calvin wanted him (he's an exceptional dog) but because I'd worked in rescue over a decade ago with the woman running this particular rescue, I was given the opportunity to adopt both boys.

That's EXACTLY what I do! I collect all sorts of gorgeous little gems of icons in a folder. Since I make icons, I pretentiously call it Inspiration -- and I DO use it when I'm stuck on text to get myself out of ruts -- but really it's my Happiness Horde. I look at it from time to time to enjoy the art, remind myself of a good fandom moment, a good story, a ridiculously pretty face...whatever. I think I was a dragon in a former life.
