23. SG-1 LIMS! & Some Icons

There's a new icon contest and it's just for Stargate SG-1: sg1_lims! Please go and join here:



If you're an icon maker, this is the best way to get honest feedback about what does - and doesn't - work about a specific icon you've made. Haven't heard of LIMS contests before? Read up about it here.

But it isn't just for icon makers! We need voters. LIMS needs people willing to vote -- and willing to say *why* they've voted as they have. The more voters we have, the more icon makers will want to participate. And there's no such thing as too many great SG-1 icons. :)

In order to pimp this in stargate_icons, I needed to include some graphics so this is lterally an icon dump.

*raised eyebrow* I believe that's overstating things. I would never have posted most of those SG-1 icons except that I wanted to pimp on Sunday, which seems to be the day I get the best response from the stargate_icons users. Many of these were in the "need to revisit" pile and the "throw away" pile but it was required so I published them regardless of my opinion.

Ah - now the B5 has some icons included that I was very happy with how they came out. I made them for a contest with the theme of humor. Some are lousy (Sinclair in the flower is crack but I couldn't devise anything funny about Sinclair smiling. *shrug*) but I like enough of the others that I'll be swapping out some of my icons. :)

I adore Bad Day; that has got to be one of the greatest icons ever. The way you emphasized Jack's pissy, pouty expression and had the text press down on Daniel's hanging head was awesome. I love the bright turquoise background, too, and the way you had echoes of that color brush the brows, hair, and faces of the figures. I also loved #11; such a clever and funny concept, and clear, warm treatment of the image. I have to admit that when I first saw the icon, I read the text as "Hunk #1 ... Loves ... Hunk #2" while Janice, absorbed in her work in the center "Loves Her Job." I kid you not. Then after staring at it for a while, I cottoned on to the idea that perhaps it was meant to be read a different way. *g* And it's hilarious as it's meant to be read, too. Anyway, the whole set is luscious; I'm glad the LIMS promotion provided an incentive to share these with us now.

I think that I should pay you. You're very good for my ego. :) I, too, like Bad Day. That was serendipity from playing around with multiple crops. I don't often take the time I should to try 10 or so crops (I'm soooooo slow as it is but I really need to do that!) to find the one I like best but this time I did because I liked the cap. :) Normally, if I'm going replace a background, I do my coloring of the cap first and then match the background to the picture. This is why I have my favorite texture sets saved as pattern files. It makes it quick to try a lot of different ones. Sometimes, if a texture looks good but has the wrong color values, I play with moving the texture below some or all of my coloring layers to see if it'll make the two blend more seamlessly in terms of hue/saturation/tones.

Ha! I tried to avoid that text confusion by using color but I know exactly what you're talking about! I tried putting in tiny arrows but that cluttered up the whole thing. To me, that cap has slashy undertones that I had a really hard time making it, if not *gen*, then neither slashy nor shippy so that it would work for oneill_icontest. Still, the coloring on that icon is not to my preference. Given more time, I'd like to have worked a bit more on Jack's face.

I came across the B5-icons on babylon5contest and wanted to comment, but it's restricted to members, so I followed you here.

It's a wonderful batch of icons. I'm especially taken with # 16, 17, 18, 21 and 29. The composition and colouring is beautiful and they all convey a very understated humour that works well for me. # 26 and 30 are just plain wonderful.

Also, # 28 is a very special kind of awesome. I've never come across a Sinclair-icon I could see myself using on a regular basis.

I'm taking the ones I've mentioned and will credit when used.

Babylon 5 is still my most favorite sci fi series because of its writing and plotting. :) I'm glad the humor works for you. I was kind of stumped with most of the caps to make them "funny" so I kind of tried anything and everything.

Sinclair defies most attempts at humor for me. There's just something so earnest about him and his Zen way of existence and, you know, the eventual role he comes to play. I really couldn't think of a single funny thing about him -- even after I read several Bab 5 quote sites, looking for inspiration.

I wish that I could remember! I thought for certain I'd gotten it from whisper99's LJ as she posted a huge number of photos between November 2007 and April 2008. I've checked her LJ and don't see it. She has some similar photos here: http://whisper99.livejournal.com/99496.html but they aren't the source of that photo.

If I can't figure out where I got it, I can make the original cap I have available to you. If I recall correctly, I think it was a cap grabbed from a Flash presentation so its quality was poor. I won't be home until late tonight but I'll check on it. :)

Yay!

I haven't stopped but my icon-fu does a serious wax/wane and I seem to be in a sort of slump. I couldn't come up with a single icon for this month's Bab5 challenge. That seriously bummed me. Ivanova is such ripe fodder for Teh Angst.

Thank you again for the banners you make. They're some of the most beautiful and creative I've ever had the pleasure of encountering, much less collecting for my very own. :)
