52 Stargate SG-1
19 Stock (cities, ancient wonders)
A lot of these icons I made for
sg1_lims. I've pared them down from the endless variations I make as part of a LIMS but this batch has several repeats. Normally I would only choose one to post but part of LIMS is sharing process and the way an icon maker works/chooses. A few of the icons were made for
oneill_icontest. :)

Date: 2008-06-14 02:13 am (UTC)BTW, I think that I forgot to ask you if I could snag this icon I'm using before I did exactly that. :)
This was my first time playing around with stock icons. I'm not certain exactly how I feel about them but I wanted to reconnect with my archaeologist self.

Date: 2008-06-18 02:34 pm (UTC)Thankfully,
I'm determined to nominate icons this week. I've been a slacker of late and that has to stop. There are so many gorgeous icons out there that I see and think, 'Oh! I have to nominate THAT!" Also, I mean to plug it in the comm this week, too. My To Do List is getting long. :|

Date: 2008-06-17 06:56 pm (UTC)#1 is just stunning. The way the light plays off the faceted effect in the background, and the way those facets echo the folds in the shirt - similar in shape and color but different in scale - is dramatic and understated at the same time. The icon shimmers; it actually seems to give off light. Truly one of the best I've ever seen. I adore #2 and 3. The coloring, the crop, the very soft image, and the concepts are awesome. What a marvelous visual imagination you have. #8 is a great crop, and the image clarity is impressive. I know from experience how difficult that cap was. #11 is another one of those OMG-how-can-she-do-such-brilliant-work icons. The background, the hair, the coloring, the pose you've caught.... It's too awesome for words. #16 is really cool and interesting; it looks like an Egyptian bas-relief; just neato. I love 21-23, maybe the one with type best. The sense of struggle in those is terrific. Massively creative crop and image treatment in #24. #26 is another of my favorites in this batch; gorgeous lighting and witty crop. I like the way Daniel's expression reads differently than in the original; it could almost be a smirk here. #28 has luscious coloring and imaginative use of a peculiar cap. I've raved about #29 already, but wanted to add that I love the impasto effect you've gotten here, particularly in that upper left-hand corner and to a gentler extent in the painting of Daniel's clothes. The myriad of techniques you employ is dazzling. #34 - sign me up! That is so creative and funny. It must have taken you ages to get it looking just right. You've even got the shadowed curve at the left for the magazine's spine! I loved your stock icons, too, particularly Vancouver and Houston. Really nifty the way you gave the less traditionally exotic locales as much mystical allure as the more usual suspects. Round of applause, Mish. Amazing work, all around!
On another topic, just in case it was you who left those thoughtful "additional feedback" comments at sg1_lims for, like, practically everyone, I wanted to say thank you so much. They were extremely interesting and helpful, and it must have taken you forever. It was really above and beyond.

Date: 2008-06-18 03:12 pm (UTC)I hope you know that I'm perfectly happy to tell you how I did anything you might wonder about; you need only tell me. Heavens knows I'll babble on endlessly about icons at the drop of a hat.
#1 -- I was especially happy with #1. I played with that for *days* to get it just right. I've always loved painted portraits and fabric especially fascinates me so it's probably no surprise I'd spend so long on Sam's shirt.
#8 -- I liked what you did with that cap better. I don't think I had a chance to comment on those icons before the next challenge rolled around so I didn't get to tell you how clever I thought yours was. And I'm having to tell you this here because (wait for it...) you haven't published your icons yet. (Not, you know, that I'm pushing or anything.)
#11 -- You know, Teryl Rothery makes it easy. She's unendingly photogenic and when they give her dramatic lighting, the result is sheer artistry.
#26 -- I loved that icon but I knew it wasn't LIMS material. I amuse myself with Daniel. He's sooooo gorgeous that I can't seem to shrink him down enough to fit all of him into an icon. Ha! I kept cropping him in close. Partially because it seems a crime to shrink him down and partially because I wanted to change his expression, as you noted. I hate that latter season Daniel is making that squinty face so often. He's too pretty for that. I loved the shadows in that cap and the suit is luscious.
#28 -- That WAS a peculiar cap, wasn't it? It seemed more normal when we were choosing; in fact, it seemed too "easy" for that level in the competition. Once I got to playing with it, though, it was tough. I made that icon for my own amusement because I knew I'd never enter it in LIMS. I love Daniel's eyes and I'm always trying to capture their magic in an icon. Thus far, I haven't succeeded but it's a nice goal to work on.
#29 -- Wish I could take credit for the impasto effect; that was total, dumb, blind luck. The technique I used in making the icon is something I got from
#34 -- I'd be a subscriber, too! I have no idea how long it took me, honestly, because it was a lot of fun. The shadowed curve turned out to be easy; I used a texture and then selectively masked off parts, IIRC. The longest that any part took me was finding and installing the barcode font. I'd install it and go to look for it and...no font. Turns out, the font name is in all lowercase and Photoshop lists those fonts at the very end, after all the fonts that start with capitals. Doh! (The barcode, btw, says, "Jack is Hot," which amused me.) I don't know that it's artistic but it was a lot of fun to make.
Hmmm...several people leave comments and I'll cop to leaving a pile of them myself. I try to give everyone feedback and I had the time during voting. I knew I'd be too busy during the discussion season at the alternates post to get to give it then. :)
AHEM -- YOU NEED TO PUBLISH YOUR ICONS. *hugs*

Date: 2008-07-13 07:40 pm (UTC)Oh, and #13 of Janet Fraiser. Although it's creative, I don't personally like the split with the bottom half of her face on the top, but I do really like the bottom split portion because of the focus on her eyes. That part of the icon is stunning and the effect of splitting it does draw attention to her gorgeous eyes and her expression
(no subject)
Date: 2008-07-15 03:04 pm (UTC)I got that profile of Teryl from a cap that
I'm not a fan of the split myself, though it distracts from the fact that I got a little too crazy with the cyan and the whites of her eyes are more like the cyans of her eyes. ;) I play around with composition a little when I'm making icons for possible entry into a LIMS competition. It means I make a lot of crappy icons, some acceptable ones, and one or two that I really love. I liked the way dividing her up worked but I wouldn't use the icon myself. I like whole faces. :)
